Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Crossville, Cumberland County
Statement at Installation Ceremony, March 21, 2008:

“We are lucky enough to live in a country that allows us, its citizens, the freedom of speech. I have chosen to put up a statue of the Flying Spaghetti Monster to represent the discourse between people of all different beliefs. The many faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds of Cumberland County’s residents make our community a stronger richer place. I respect and am proud that on the people’s lawn, the county courthouse, all of these diverse beliefs can come together in a positive dialogue. Here, we are all able to share the issues close to our hearts whether it is through a memorial to the soldiers killed fighting for our country, the Statue of Liberty honoring our nations welcoming promise to all, a group’s fight to stop homelessness, or powerful symbols of faith. I greatly treasure this open forum between everyone in the community.”

The Flying Spaghetti Monster is indeed the melding of pasta and meaty sauce; it’s a pile of noodles and meatballs.  TFSM was created to humorously take down the walls between ‘them and us’ and pave the way for dialogue and foster intelligent thought. The right to erect a statue is a gift of our freedom as Americans; permission to be different is a freedom. The gift of freedom to express those differences is what makes us great - even if it does seem noodley.

Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, MSU

The national "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster" has a local chapter at MSU, and it's sending a strong message to students on campus.

The group at Missouri State University claims to have over 200 members and is the second largest religious group at the school. Some members are MSU staff.

Student Jeffrey Markus wanted to be a member of the group at MSU. The group’s captain, J.T. Eberhard says: “For the people that are not heavily into a religion it feels like a real welcome movement because here on campus there's a lot of people who are very confused on what they believe and on what they want. A lot of times when you're talking about emotionally or religious charged issues its very difficult to have a reasonable conversation. People on both sides, I think one side in particular have divorced themselves from reason to such a degree that is very hard to have a logical discussion with them."
